Here’s how you can improve your brain efficiency.

July 27, 2020 by TCM Leave a Comment

Brain Rules - John Medina

Do you know how our brain works? if not, then it’s a major drawback when it comes to business. Cognitive literacy helps us to understand why we behave in certain ways along with other’s behavior. Here’s a brief outlook about how our brain works and how to use that knowledge to practical use from John Medina’s bestselling book “Brain Rules”.

Without much ado, here are the key takeaways from the book:

1. Like any other system, our brains also need a proper diet, exercise, rest, and sleep

Our mind and body aren’t any different entities. Our brain is a system that has requirements, that shouldn’t be dodged like exercise, rest, and sleep for our mind to deliver optimal performance. This has been proved via a lot of experiments for ages.

2. Every individual’s brain development is different, based on their experiences and the environment they dwell in.

Our brain is malleable, most neuroscientists often term this as “plasticity.” The structure of our brain keeps changing as our experiences & environment change. This continues until the end of our lives.

Since these experiences vary based on different environments & experiences over a lifetime, each individual ends up with a unique brain that processes information in its own way. Though there are many similarities, there is nothing like a “standard” brain.

Fixing Brain

3. A brain is a survival tool that pays more attention to threats and opportunities using emotions and actions.

During our evolution, many years ago our environment was full of threats like predators, dangerous animals, enemy tribes & other similar elements. In order to survive, our ancestors had to utilize available opportunities to live long enough and to reproduce. Thus, our brains are designed to protect us. Though the modern environment is very different, the opportunities are enough & life threats are scarce.

The survival instinct remains the same & the fact is that most of us are trying to run ancient software on modern hardware i.e our brain, that constantly overlooks the opportunities by covering them with magnified threats. That’s why we often seem to do so many irrational and inefficient things. Check out this video by us to understand such behavior.

4. Multitasking is a myth

Our brain can only focus on one thing at a time!

Let’s relate attention to the flashlight beam which can never be flashed on two separate objects simultaneously. However, you can rapidly switch the beam to and fro among them. Paying attention to more than one task simultaneously is beyond the human mind’s capability.

When multitasking, all you are doing is switching your attention to and fro the tasks you are trying to focus on. With every such switch, you lose productivity, as your brain takes time to re-load information about the task you are focusing on. So, multitasking is a productivity killer.

For best outcomes, focus on one thing at a time. Multitasking may feel more productive, but it’s just a feeling which is quite misleading.

Brain Emotions

5. Context, Emotion, & Repetition can help amalgamate and store patterns as memories in our brain.

Unlike computer harddisk, our brain stores memories as patterns once recognized in the world. The key to remember such memories is that it’s contextual & stored in a huge network of associations, used by our brain to quickly recall patterns.

Emotion and repetition help amalgamate memories as they are important indicators. Emotions like excitement, fright, depression, or anger are stored more quickly as they are very important ancestral survival instincts. Repetition indicates the commonality of the pattern in a particular environment, which also indicates that it’s important in one way or the other.

If you wonder why beer ads feature more of women in bikini and confident men, the prime time news is frightening or sometimes depressing, or why people care what brand of sports shoes do Virat Kohli prefers, remember that memory is retrieved via context and association.

6. Our brains associate long-term memories with sensory data to mentally simulate potential actions beforehand.

Our brain often helps us to predict our action’s consequences. Mental Simulation enables us to work out the results of our actions before we act to keeps us away from troubles. As discussed in the previous point, our brain is always in Pattern Matching mode, saving the outcomes in memory.

When we’re trying to figure out our possible actions in any given situation, our brain depends on the stored patterns in memory to figure out what to do. Together with the perceptions, these memories help us judge what to do next when our actions are unknown.

7. Stress and tiredness dramatically affect our brain’s ability to function

Our body is built to handle stress, but not for long. During the ancestral times, sudden threats were imminent but brief. (Either the lion caught and ate you, or you dodged it within a few minutes.)

Though, the stresses are comparatively less acute now but may be chronic. You can be afraid of losing your job or depressed due to a certain financial burden for years. Our body is not designed to handle stress for such a long period. The hormones involved (cortisol, DHEA, adrenaline, etc) if present in our systems can have serious impacts on our body and brain.

During stress, our mind functions at a much lower capacity, reducing our ability to think and take proper decisions. So, in such cases, you need to change your environment to get rid of such stressors ASAP. Exercise and meditation can be the best form to control the same.

Attention

8. Capturing attention

To capture attention one needs to constantly provide new inputs in as many sensory ways as possible.

Our minds always pay attention to stimuli sensed through our sense organs. Media like TV, movies, video games, and the Internet are rapidly changing, always providing new content & concept to pay attention to every now and then. This makes it easy to lose time paying attention to them.

On the other hand, when you ever try to meditate or sit in an empty room for some time, you start feeling anxious, and your brain starts searching for something new to pay attention to.

If your work involves paying attention, your mind needs a change. You may introduce a new idea or stimulus every few minutes – and that’s how author John Medina, intentionally structures his course for long-lasting attention.

Brain Map

9. Plasticity of the brain: Constantly learning throughout the life

The new advances in neuroscience indicate that the brain changes and grows throughout life. So, if you thought you are “too old” to learn a new skill (check this out)or try something different, you are wrong. Our brain always maintains the capacity for any change and growth. The best way to learn new things is to explore and Experiment in various ways (check out one here), so go out into the world and try something new today!

These were the few rules from the book Brain Rules by John Medina. A must-read if you want to explore more such rules and unlock the power of your brain.

India V/S China – How 2020 is not same as 1962?

July 11, 2020 by TCM Leave a Comment

Ladakh - china border

India v/s China: Considering exaggerated claims by China on the Galwan valley, India on July 9th,  said the earliest complete disengagement of the troops along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) was the need of the hour. The stand taken by India, not to have any dialogues until disengagement of Chinese troops from LAC seems to have worked pretty well.

The disengagement news has been confirmed by the Chinese ambassador Sun Weidong (Source) who also appealed that China and India should have strategic discussions to enhance mutual trust and shun friction.

Today we will discuss, our readiness at the border based on Harvard Kennedy’s Belfer Center research (source) comparing both the countries’ strategic assets. However, war is the last thing we would expect, this article is just to discuss our readiness in such a situation.

The Indian Military has an edge over Chinese in the high-altitude region

We need to understand that in this case, the major role players during the war will be ground troops, Air force & Nuclear power. Let’s have a look at the individual comparative study:

Ground Forces Comparision (India v/s China)

We not only have a higher number of troops but also tank brigades to support them.

Ground Forces-comparision india v/s china
Source: belfercenter.org

Air Forces Comparision(China v/s India)

Due to more distance of Chinese airstrip from LAC, their fighter jets might not have enough endurance. They might need a higher number of refueling to sustain the battle.

Air Force Comparision india v/s china
Source: belfercenter.org

Nuclear Forces Comparision (India v/s China)

According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), China has approximately 320 nuclear warheads while India has only 150. However, both nations have a “no first use” policy, i.e they have pledged only to use nuclear arms in defense of a nuclear attack.

Even in that case, both nations have almost full coverage of each other.

Source: belfercenter.org

So, when it comes to the military we have a better edge, apart from that many other countries like the U.S, Israel to name a few will be in our support post CoronaVirus pandemic (also read Are young people safe from COVID-19?).

What can be our role amid such tensions at the border?

We have already discussed the following in our video below:
  • China’s unfair trade practices, owing to which they can supply goods at the cheapest prices throughout the world.
  • How they have been using Debt Diplomacy to capture some of the strategic locations in different parts of the world.
Check this out & our role to support the current situation in the video below:

Success is the Best Revenge: Ratan Tata’s Case Study

July 6, 2020 by TCM Leave a Comment

Range Rover - JLR -Ratan Tata

Ratan Tata, the chairman of the Indian conglomerate Tata Group in 1999, was humiliated when he together with his team visited Detroit to sell the group’s fledgling car business to Ford back in 1999 but came back to ‘do an enormous favor’ nine years later by taking over the US giant Ford’s luxury segment Jaguar and Land Rover (JLR) via all-cash transaction of $2.3 billion from Ford in June 2008, the amount that was almost half of what Ford paid to acquire both brands.

Changing Consumer Preference from luxury cars to luxury SUVs came as a blessing in disguise for JLR business. Using his car segment experience (see video below), Ratan Tata responded to this changing consumer needs immediately. So, the changes that could have taken up to 3-5 years, took just 1-2 years under his leadership at JLR.

By 2013, his strategy to invest in new products such as a better engine and design started paying off. With the introduction of new sports cars and entry-level Jaguars into markets, sales clocked up to 80,000 units that year. It further increased to almost 1,75,000 units by 2017 revving JLR revenue up to $34 Billion, a much better ROI.

What exactly led to this success and growth in Ratan Tata’s car segment business?

We have explained the same in the video below:

Are you having Sleep-less nights? – Here’s a 2 min solution

June 25, 2020 by TCM Leave a Comment

Sleepless

After an exhausting day when you go to your bed and are unable to sleep. Literally a few minutes back you were dying to get into your bed and now You’re perfectly awake.

So now you try alternate ways to sleep & are increasingly more conscious of every waking second of sleep time that you’re losing and a bad day tomorrow as you are going to be feeling sleepy at college or work.

Oh my god, it 3 am now and you still can’t sleep!!

If this sounds familiar to you then this article is for you. We have compiled a number of the easy to implement advice and practices to increase your odds of falling asleep in minutes.

We will even discuss a way employed by the United States Navy to nod off in just 2 minutes!

Here are a few things that you should do before you sleep:

Sleep in cold -pug

1. Sleep in a colder environment

Your thermal environment, surrounding your head and body is probably the most unappreciated factor determining not only the convenience with which you’ll sleep but also your sleep quality. Whether you’re overheating due to heavy blankets or simply a hot room it has been shown to deteriorate the sleep pattern.

Just to initiate sleep your body has to drop 2- 3 deg F or 1.5 deg C. Being colder helps bring this temperature down faster. It’d shock you but the recommended temperature is around 65 deg. F or 18.3 deg C for your room. Going too cold isn’t good either but it doesn’t have an equivalent disruptive effect on falling asleep or your sleep quality as a hot room does.

2. Take a hot shower or bath before bed for better sleep

You would possibly think, being all warm and fuzzy is what causes you to sleep but its quite the other way. When you’re exposed to a temperature the body can’t hold on to, the heart sends blood to the surface of your skin giving you that red appearance. Once you exit the warm water, the dilated blood vessels radiate out the inner heat to your environment and your core blood heat plummets. This triggers the body and brain to think it’s time to sleep.

clock -coffee

3. Put away the clock

Simply having the power to see the time and determine what proportion you haven’t slept isn’t helpful and can honestly only stress you out. Time monitoring is strongly linked to worry and waking arousal for you.

4. Minimize or avoid caffeine and nicotine

Coffee, colas, tea, or even chocolate can take hours to wear out fully and nicotine may be a stimulant. So avoid them too late within the day. It is also worth avoiding eating next to your bed. While some studies show, avoiding diets that are excessively biased towards carbs will help. It’s better to avoid being too hungry or too full before bed.

5. Exercise effect on Sleep

Being physically tired can assist you to nod off faster but exercising just 2- 3 hours before bed can keep you up longer. So, earlier within the day is the best time to exercise. On a similar basis, naps are great but don’t take them after 3 p.m. or it’ll be harder to sleep in the night.

6. Confirm you’re relaxing before bed

If you are trying to sleep, your brain just won’t be ready. A soothing activity within the hour before bed like reading is that the perfect ritual to place you within the right mindset.

7. Confirm you’re getting enough sun exposure

Minimizing your light exposure during the evening i.e not using your smartphones before bed is important. However, it’s equally important to have some natural sunlight for a minimum of half-hour each day. If you’ve got problems falling asleep, this helps to condition your body’s schedule and trigger tiredness at the proper times.

Now that we’ve found out some conditions for optimizing your experience of falling asleep are you still unable to sleep?

Maybe you’ve already done those things & you’re lying in bed immediately desperately looking up the way to nod off faster which led you to this very article.

In that case, you’ve already broken rule seven of not watching your smartphone.

Sleeping

However, if you’re still laying in the bed, there is a way that the U.S. Navy used, that if practiced can have you fall asleep in just a few minutes regardless of where you are.

These studies aren’t publicly available but they claim that they were used on fighter pilots who would often make avoidable mistakes as a result of stress and ultimately sleeplessness. They were designed to permit them to sleep even while sitting up.

After 6 weeks they claim that majority of the pilots could nod off in two minutes.

The 2 min Process for a quick sleep

The process is systematically relaxing each part of your body while taking a deep breath to shut your eyes,

Start focussing on your face, picture every muscle slowly relaxing, if it helps squish and squint your face first then let it relax. Exhale as you are feeling your cheeks, tongue, mouth, and jaw relaxed. Even imagine your eyes sinking into their sockets.

Then slowly make your way down your body and do an equivalent thing to every muscle group. Tighten then relax your shoulders, then arms from forearms to fingers, chest, legs, and eventually your feet. All while breathing deeply and focussing on the entire body.

Then focus on clearing your mind into a meditative state. As thoughts about your day or images pop into your mind, try to not linger over them and allow them to pass. Simply thinking through motions can stimulate your muscles to involuntarily contract very similar to meditation. Keep taking deep breaths, inhaling in and out.

If you cannot stop your thoughts they suggest repeating “don’t think” for 10 seconds. It sounds silly or fairly simple but anecdotally it has worked for people. All it takes is to be consistent & practice each night. Though it won’t be an easy solution on your first night, within weeks it will be far more likely to sleep instantly assuming you do not have a disorder or other condition.

Bonus Suggestion

One more suggestion that’s considered the only most vital tip to falling asleep immediately. If you cannot follow any others follow this, go to bed and wake up at the same time of day regardless of anything. Even the weekends, we do know it sucks, but we’re creatures of habit. If you would like to be ready to sleep immediately, getting into an honest routine will make your body figure like clockwork.

Studies show that not falling asleep for an extended period causes anxiety. It only makes things worse so just get up and do a soothing or slightly boring activity until you are feeling sleepy.

Are young people safe from COVID-19?

June 25, 2020 by TCM Leave a Comment

When COVID-19 or Corona Virus started to spread, it was mostly about older people, in particular, those over 60 were the major targets of the virus. But now that more stories and data about young people are coming out from hospitals, are young people really safe? Let’s find out!

Young People -Corona Virus

Today we will look at the corona-virus data and its impact on different age groups from infection rates to hospitalization to the death toll.

First, we broadly looked at the ones under 60, because many of the studies that came out used this designation & then we will look more specifically at them between 18 and 44 years old and then finally at those under 20 with the available data.

It is important to note that Corona-virus can have a serious toll on our respiratory system. When it gets into our lungs, the virus damages the alveoli, which are tiny sacs in the lungs that exchange oxygen. If these alveoli are damaged by the virus then it creates more difficulty in breathing. Our immune system can sometimes make things worse by going into overdrive and also kill “good” cells which in turn provides more fluid and blockages in the lungs. This will be important to remember for later when talking about the lungs and immune systems of the young and the elderly.

Analysis / Statistics

For analysis purposes, we will also consider the available data from New York as its total number of cases is comparable to that of India (NY -4.13 Lacs, India- 4.73 lacs) (Source).

Let’s look at the percentage of people that dies per age group in the table below:

Health data - New York
Underlying illnesses include Diabetes, Lung Disease, Cancer, Immunodeficiency, Heart Disease, Hypertension, Asthma, Kidney Disease, and GI/Liver Disease. (Source)

It’s clear the older you are, the higher the risk of death. In April, the CDC (Center for Disease Control & Prevention) released data that looked at Corona patients from the U.S. for a month.

CDC data
Source: cdc.gov

The people aged between 18 and 49 who receive COVID-19 are still around 18% out of the total hospitalized. However, this number may still be lower in India as it records 0.2 Corona deaths per lakh population as against the global figure of 4.1 as per health ministry (Source) as of last month.

Though, our mortality rate is lesser in comparison to the global average owing to better immunity. In India (as of May ’20), out of 3435 deaths, 49.5% were below 60 years of age.

Out of total deaths, nearly 2.47% of people aged 15-30, 11.4% aged 30-45, 35.08% aged 45-60, and 50.5 above 60 years of age have died. (Source)

Has anything changed since the beginning when we were told it was only about the elderly?

The truth is that the conversation started around people in China who died. The early stats that came in were mainly about the older population. However, now we are receiving broader data on common infections and serious cases, not just the death toll.

In general, only a small number of people under 60 die, but it can still happen.

Furthermore, data from New York City has shown that of those under 60 who died 95% already had an underlying medical condition. This is almost the same as in India. Experts point out that while the disease outcome is worse in older people with co-morbidities even younger ones who are immuno-compromised can be vulnerable.

Although this does not mean that young people are not seriously infected. So while the number of deaths in healthy young persons is low, it is important to remember that major illness and hospitalizations are still significant.

The chance that a young person dies without an underlying medical condition is rare, but can it happen?

YES! if the total number of infections increases even though the young individual’s deaths are low, this number will also rise. So, unfortunately, we are going to hear more stories about young, healthy people who die.

Young People Corona

What about people specifically under 30?

In India, as of May ’20, there have been quite a several cases. To be precise its 103 including 17 kids who are less than 15 years of age & have succumbed to the infection. It targets vital organs such as lung, kidney, and heart.

Why do healthy young people die at all?

One theory is that some individuals simply have a genetic predisposition making them less responsive to this virus. There may be a specific gene that modifies respiratory receptors making it easier for the virus to infect people’s lungs.

It may also be related to viral load i.e. the number of virus particles that infect you as an individual. With a higher dose, it might have a less good outcome.

Why is it generally rarer for young people to die?

As you age, your lung and chest muscles become weaker and your immune system slows down. The elderly are more likely to have problems such as diabetes or a heart condition. For children, there is a theory that their immune system is a little bit underdeveloped in some ways. So it is less prone to overdrive and fills the lungs with fluid.

We didn’t want to scare people, but to make sure people understand that it can happen to young people too. Even if you don’t show any symptoms while others only exhibiting mild symptoms does not make us young and healthy. Many cases of young people have had a fever for weeks, absolute physical exhaustion, and difficulty breathing.

Remember! India has limited medical Infrastructure compared to its population.

Medical doctor -Corona

Even if you don’t get seriously ill, that doesn’t mean you can’t be a carrier and give it to others, whether they’re young or old.

And as hospitals fill up and become overloaded, the cases that can be treated with intensive care may not be treated, regardless of age due to lack of hospital staff or lack of proper equipment.

So remember! Although your chances of death from Corona are not high, it is important to take enough precautions & stay away from people by maintaining proper social distancing to keep yourself safe, keep others safe, and to help the hospitals keep us safe.

The Secret of Achieving more with Less!

June 22, 2020 by TCM Leave a Comment

The Secret“Strive for Excellence in few things, rather than good performance in many” – 80-20 Principle by Richard Koch.

Richard Koch’s The 80/20 Principle guides us on how to ensure that our efforts produce the best possible outcome for any job at hand.

This principle has been expressed in many forms namely Pareto’s Law, Juran’s Law of the Vital Few, Zipf’s Principle of Least Effort but the idea behind all remains the same that few things do matter a lot and most things matter less.

This principle is applicable for all aspects of life be it business, you want to learn something new(Read here), studies, Research, etc.

Let’s have a look at a few significant practical aspects of this principle from the book enumerated below:

1: Fewer inputs leads to a majority of outputs(80-20).

Example, think of your wardrobe full of clothes but there are very few (20% of them) that you wear most of the time (80% of the time)

Now check out your smartphone for contacts, it’s certain that there are only a few contacts (20% of them) with whom you spend the majority of your time. (80% of your non-sleeping time)

To reiterate fewer causes create the majority of effects.Portfolio (80-20)

Think about the decisions you’ve made so far in your life. You take many decisions throughout the day, but where you are now can be traced back to just a few decisions you made that have led you to where you stand now.

The same thing is applicable to investments – the majority of the portfolio returns come from a few critical choices you made to purchase or sell certain securities/assets (to learn about stock market click here). Similarly, most of the loss generation on a portfolio also comes from a few decisions.

2: A minority of efforts lead to a majority of results(80-20).

Think of everything you’ve achieved so far in life be it education, career, etc. There are very high chances that the skills you need to do your job are a small section of what you’ve learned or what you can do better, but these small sections produce the majority of what you earn.

3. Identify and build upon 20% of efforts that produce 80% of the results.

The 80-20 Principle
Click on the book to order it now

If you really want to improve at anything, focus only on what matters most. Irrespective of the field whether it’s conducting business, working on a project, trying to crack a competitive exam, or strengthening personal bonds. Few things matter a lot and many that don’t matter at all.

If you pledge to study what matters most, you improve your effectiveness tremendously. You’ll be spending lesser time, money, and efforts – and get far better results.

4. Eliminate or reduce the 80% of efforts that produce poor results.

Vice-versa to the above points also holds true: in every task, there is an umpteen number of ways to waste your time and resources. It pays to use your energy wisely. If something is just a little useful, delegate or delete it.

By making some tough decisions about what to focus on and what to not, you’ll unlock a huge amount of productivity in terms of time and energy to focus on what will really want to achieve.

5: When it comes to business, focus on your products and customers that bring you major profits & reduce the rest.

Every individual is created equal, but the same does not hold true for all the customers. Some will feel like presents sent from heaven & will enthusiastically buy anything you offer. Others will feel as if rising from hell – will buy whatever you sell, but will never be happy, they’ll fill you with complaints, and will demand special treatment.

Here’s the rule: segregate your best customers, and focus on doing everything to serve them the best of service possible. Similarly, identify worst customers, and fire them – they represent a huge opportunity in terms of time and effort.

6: In life, focus on the things that give more satisfaction.

The 80/20 Principle extends to life satisfaction as well. A few activities contribute most to your overall happiness and inner peace. These things are the ones that you should build your life around. For some, its spending time with family and friends, having fruitful discussions with people, sharing knowledge, or reading everything that intrigues your interest. If you want to lead a happy life, then this is how one should spend most of their time.

To summarize up all, always remember Its never your efforts for which you are rewarded. Nobody cares how much time you spent doing something. All that is cared about is how important and meaningful is your final outcome.

For example, You may spend years tirelessly doing labor jobs no one will bother but spending those years doing something like curing a serious disease, and EVERYONE will care.

So, whatever you decide to do, just spend some time, in the beginning, breaking that goal into subgoals (20%) that appears to be more important to master the majority (80%) of end result.

If you liked the summary you will definitely like the whole book, it is one of the must-reads.

Learn anything in just 20 hours!!

June 22, 2020 by TCM Leave a Comment

Every Skill has its learning curve

20 Hours

For those who believe that time is money and thinking about how to encash it, then this article is exactly what you are looking for. 20 hours is just what you need.

Stop whatever you are doing and just think for a moment what all skills you want to acquire or learn to do in life?

We know there will be many if you list them down.

So, what’s stopping you from getting the learning process started?

And here goes your thinking cycle again and now your brain is manipulating you and giving you reasons why you should not do it, let me list down a few of the reasons it might be giving you such as who has the spare time for that? , there is too much effort involved to master any skill, from whom I am gonna learn it from……..Blah Blah Blah.

As per research, it takes 10,000 hours to master a new skill. Who has that kind of time in today’s fast pacing world?

10,000 hours is almost 4 years if you practice 8 hours daily, but that’s true only if you want to be an expert in that skill. The first few hours of practice are very frustrating and 80% of people drop the idea of pursuing it.

It’s so much easier to sit back relax, watch TV series, and surf the web…

But What if we tell you that you can learn/acquire any skill in just 20 hours… unbelievable right but that’s true. People have done it and it does not require any high-level IQ or any extraordinary talent.

It is just the proper way of planning and the right amount of research which any of us can do.

The First 20 Hours – Josh Kaufman

Click on the Book Image to get this book right now.

In The First 20 Hours, Josh Kaufman makes it possible by offering a systematic approach to acquire any new skill as quickly as possible. Be it playing any musical instrument, to learning how to start a new business. Similar to the 80-20 principle (read here) these 20 hours of practice will get 80% of learning covered which is good enough to serve our purpose.
